Visitors to Modern Railways RVE will have the opportunity to ride behind the UK’s first fully operating hydrogen train, thanks to a partnership with the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE).
Designed and built in the UK, the 10¼-inch gauge locomotive Hydrogen Hero will be a leading attraction at the show. Visitors to the UK’s only dedicated rolling stock event, held on 4 October at the Derby Velodrome, will enjoy the opportunity to ride behind the locomotive as well as to discuss the technology and its development with representatives of BCRRE.
Provision of alternative power sources for trains is a hot topic in the rail industry at present, with politicians giving enthusiastic support to the potential application of hydrogen power in the UK. The development of the demonstration model forms part of research into this area by BCRRE, a leading institution within the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN). The University of Birmingham’s BCRRE is the largest university-based centre for railway research and education in Europe, with more than 140 researchers and staff developing world-leading new technologies and products for trains, railway systems and infrastructure that will deliver a better, more reliable and efficient railway to the UK.
The presence of Hydrogen Hero at Modern Railways RVE provides a further attraction at the show, on top of a thought-provoking conference and the popular Meet The Buyer event.
